GENEVA -- The Hobart Statesmen (10-7) scored three second period goals and went on to a 4-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (6-10-2) in a non-conference road game on Saturday night.
Hobart’s Brad Richard scored two goals. The Statesmen were able to pressure Potsdam from the outset, throwing 15 shots on Bears senior goalie Kevin McFarland (St. Louis, Mo./Woodstock Slammers) in the opening period.
However, McFarland turned aside every puck he faced. Potsdam killed off two penalties in the first period and the contest went into the first break scoreless.
Hobart broke through at the 5:56 mark of the second period. Ryan Michel set up Rick Longobardi to put the Statesmen in front for good. Nearly seven minutes later, Hobart got a power-play marker from Richard with an assist from Frank Salituro.
With just seven seconds remaining in the period, Tom Rush struck for a third goal. Brendan Fitzgerald assisted on the play.
The Statesmen were whistled for penalty after penalty in the third period allowing the Bears to gain some momentum. Potsdam was unable to solve Hobart goalie Martin Ausserhoffer.
The Statesman tacked on another power-play goal at 16:15. Richard netted his second of the evening with another assist from Salituro to close the scoring at 4-0.
McFarland finished with 49 saves for the Bears, while Ausserhoffer stopped 20 to earn the shutout.
Hobart outshot Potsdam 53-20 and was 2-7 on the man-advantage. The Bears were 0-8 on the power play.
Potsdam returns to conference play when the Bears travel to rival Plattsburgh to face the Cardinals at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27.
