Comeback bid falls short at Brown for Saints men's hockey

Third period goals from Zach Risteau and David Jankowski pulled the St. Lawrence men's hockey team within one, but the comeback bid fell short as Brown edged the Saints 3-2 on Saturday night in ECAC Hockey action at the Meehan Auditorium in Providence, Rhode Island.

Jankowski's power play tally midway through the final frame was his first goal of the season, while junior defenseman Bo Hanson led the Saints with a pair of assists. Ashton Fry also picked up an assist on the Risteau goal for his second point of the weekend.

Brown led 3-0 after the first period after capitalizing on St. Lawrence turnovers to beat starting netminder Daniela Mannella, but the Saints gained momentum through the second and were dominant in the third, outshooting the Bears 17-3 through the final 20 minutes.

St. Lawrence finished with a 35-20 advantage in shots on goal, but Brown goaltender Gavin Nieto made 33 saves, including 15 in the third to help the Bears hang on for the win.

Brown's Justin Jallen put the home team in front in the opening minutes of the first with a wrister from the slot at the 3:39 mark off a feed from Colin Burston.

In the latter half of the frame, it was Luke Krys and Brent Beaudoin who pushed the Bears' lead to 3-0 with goals less than two minutes apart.

After a scoreless second period, Risteau put the Saints on the board at 5:13 of the first with his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Fry hit Hanson in the neutral zone for a clean entry into the Bears' zone before the Boise, Idaho native dropped the puck for a Risteau wrister from the left wing side that beat Nieto low blocker to make it a 3-1 game.

At the 11:01 mark of the final frame, Jankowski pounced on a rebound at the edge of the crease on Nieto's blocker side to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Hanson set Kaden Pickering up for a one-time blast from the left circle which was stopped by the Bears' netminder, but he couldn't get across quick enough to stop Jankowski's put back.

In the final 10 minutes of the third, the Saints put four shots on net, but their best opportunites to tie may have come in shots that went just wide from both Alex Gilmour and Aleksi Peltonen in the closing seconds with the extra attacker on the ice.

St. Lawrence finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while Brown went 0-for-1 on Saturday night.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 3-10-1 overall with a 1-5-0 record in conference play. Brown improves to 3-5-0 both overall and against ECAC Hockey opponents.

St. Lawrence will host Maine next weekend for a non-conference set at the Roos House Ice Arena at SUNY Canton, with Friday's game schedule for a 7:30 p.m. start.
