The St. Lawrence University softball team earned a split against Elmira College (1-1) Thursday in Canton, NY.  The Saints (7-7) avenged a 6-5 loss in the first game with a walk-off 4-3 win in the second game.

It was Elmira that struck first, scoring one run in the third and three more runs in the fourth.  The Saints got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore Chelsea Cavellier hit a single to right field and later scored on two consecutive Elmira miscues.   Senior tri-captain Meg Goodemote plated sophomore Dani Durocher on a single to left field, cutting the Saints' deficit down to two (4-2).

First-year student Khalshia White sparked the Saints in the fifth, smacking a leadoff triple to right field.  Sophomore Lauren Weisbarth laid down a sacrifice bunt to score White to bring the score to 4-3.

Elmira scored two more runs to bring the score to 6-3 before senior Rachel Duffany kicked off a seventh inning Saint rally, earning a walk.  First-year student Becky Allen hit a single to left field and White reached on an infield single to load the bases for the Saints with no outs.

First-year student Leslie Stratton hit a sac fly to score Duffany and advance the runners, bringing the score to 6-4.  With one out, Weisbarth once again loaded the bases on an infield hit, before Elmira pitcher Alex Puglisi retired sophomore Chelsea Cavellier.  First-year student Caroline Kieltyka hit the ball to the third baseman who bobbled it, allowing Allen to score bringing the Saints to within one with the bases loaded.  Puglisi forced McGinley to fly out, Cutting the Saints' comeback short and ending game one with the score of 6-5.

In the second game, the two teams remained scoreless through three innings though the Saints produced base runners in those innings.  The Soaring Eagles struck first again, scoring two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.

Keeping with the theme of the day, the Saints rallied late in the game when Kieltyka and McGinley reached on consecutive base hits in the bottom of the sixth.  Kieltyka crossed the plate on a hit up the middle by Duffany to break the scoreless streak and bring the score to 3-1.  White then belted her second triple of the day to score McGinley and Duffany and tie the score at 3-3.

After Elmira's Rumsey hit a double to left center, Kieltyka snagged a line drive and flipped the ball to Weisbarth at second for the double play.  Junior Chelsea Hanno grabbed a fly ball to center to end the inning and leave the score tied at 3-3.

In the seventh, Kieltyka hit a 2-out triple to rightcenter, but Elmira's short stop made a nice play on McGinley's line drive to send the game into extra innings.

After holding the Soaring Eagles scoreless in the eighth, Duffany bunted junior Darcy Buckingham over to third base after she was placed on second due to the international tiebreaker rule.  Allen hit the walk-off single to left field, scoring Buckingham and allowing the Saints to celebrate the 4-3 victory on their home field.

Kieltyka finished 3-for-4 for the Saints, while McGinley and Duffany both tallied two hits apiece.  White had two triples on the day and batted in two runs.

McGinley pitched the complete game for the win, allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out nine.

The Saints will host North Country rival Potsdam State in a double-header on Saturday.  Game one is schedule to begin at 1:00 pm.
