To the Editor:
I recently had a need to visit the St. Lawrence County Social Service building in Canton while using crutches. I found that the building is not ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. No automatic doors, no ramps. I had to be let in by one of the security officers after he noticed me struggling with the outside door. This officer told me he has been complaining about the need to have the building made handicapped accessible for years but it had fallen on deaf ears.
This is a county building and I could not believe that it was not accessible to handicapped individuals. The Americans with Disabilities Act has been in effect since 1990. I would think by now our county would see that this building is made compliant.
