To the Editor:
National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) will celebrate its tenth anniversary on September 20. Since the first NVRD, nearly 4.7 million people have registered to vote on this “holiday” which is intended to focus attention on the importance of voting.
Every year on NVRD, volunteers and organizations all over the country come together to set up voter registration tables, and engage in media outreach to help Americans register to vote.
According to 2020 Census data, as many as one quarter of those eligible to vote are not registered. The sponsors and partners involved in NVRD aim to shrink that number toward zero.
The National League of Women Voters is proud to be one of the ninety-eight organizations and companies that are “Premier Partners” of National Voter Registration Day. There are thousands more local partners across the country, including the LWV of St. Lawrence County.
Visit the League’s “one stop” voter information site, www.Vote411.org to check your registration status, or find out how to register online, in person or by mail. On Vote411 you can also locate your polling site, and learn more about the candidates running for Federal and state offices.
General Election Day is November 8. Early voting will be available from October 29 through November 6. The early voting polling sites in St. Lawrence County are: 42 Maple St. in Potsdam (Clarkson Building—former Honda dealership), and at the Dobisky Center in Ogdensburg (100 Riverside Ave.). The last day to apply for an absentee ballot online or to postmark an application sent by mail is October 24. The last day to apply in person to vote absentee is November 7.
Your vote is your voice: if you aren’t already registered, get ready to make yourself heard by registering to vote on National Voter Registration Day. If you can’t do it then, remember that the deadline to register this year is October 14.
Once you’re registered, the League of Women Voters reminds you to VOTE: It Counts!
