BOCES names students of the month for December

The three BOCES Career & Technical Centers in St. Lawrence County have recognized outstanding students.

Seaway Career & Technical Education Center in Norwood is pleased to announce Samantha Foster as the Potsdam Rotary Club Student of the Month for December 2020.

At Northwest Career and Technical Center in Ogdensburg, Jaselyn Pomales-Santana was recognized as the December Student of the Month. Pomales-Santana is majoring in Cosmetology.

At the Southwest Career & Technical Center in Fowler, Breena Drake, daughter of Brian and Kimberly Drake, was selected as the December Student of the Month, sponsored by the Gouverneur Chamber of Commerce. She attends Gouverneur Central and is enrolled in the Allied Health Program.

Other students receiving Program Student of the Month honors at Seaway Tech include: Rose Bigelow, Canton, Building Trades; Natalie Currier, Canton, Cosmetology; Abigail Cary, Norwood, Criminal Justice; Avery Collins, Parishville-Hopkinton, Education & Human Services; Conor Taillon, Parishville-Hopkinton, HVAC/R; and Gavin Thompson, Canton, Natural Resource Management.

At Seaway Tech, Foster is a student in the Software Development & Business Design Program. From Brasher Falls Central School District, she is daughter of David & April Foster.

In the junior year of SD & BD, students learn how to develop web pages through the use of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript along with understanding of design concepts and how they affect the world of web development.

They are also introduced to more advanced programming skills with PHP and MySQL. They develop websites, web software packages and other projects.

In their senior year, students learn advanced web design, advance software development, web server management and business. Senior work is geared towards preparing for more client-based interactions and web projects to prepare them for the changing dynamics of the software development world.

“Sam is very focused and shows a great deal of initiative in this program,” said instructor David Wells. “She never fails to turn in assignments on time. She is always willing to help fellow students and is a pleasure to have in this program”.
