Potsdam Public Library Computer Center to offer free Microsoft, web classes in March

POTSDAM – The Potsdam Public Library Computer Center has announced its slate of classes for the month of March.

Beginning March 2 – FAST (Free Assisted Self-prepared Tax Returns) – Mon., Wed. & Fri., noon-4 p.m., no appointment necessary. Taxpayers prepare their own forms using private vendor tax programs for free. Income no more than $31,000 if non- military, $57,000 if military.

March 5 – Basic Computing - 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Class covers the use of files and folders, how to create and organize files, naming and renaming files and creating shortcuts. We also examine the nature, storage and transfer of data (cut/copy and paste) and backing up data. Use of split screen to accommodate two documents side by side is also covered. -Instructor Bob Watkins Volunteer Trainer.

March 6 – Introduction to Powerpoint – 1-3 p.m. Do you know how to create flashy presentations that convey your knowledge of a certain subject? PowerPoint presentations can be made into photo albums, complete with music or narrations, or to distribute on CDs or DVDs. If you are in the sales field, just a few simple clicks can add an illustrative chart of data or an organizational chart of your company’s structure. This course will give you the tools needed to create a longer presentation in the future. Instructor: Adam, Clarkson University volunteer.

March 7 – Explore your Inner Talents – noon. Learning how to make Chiabbata Bread using YouTube: Examples will be available for taste testing.

Beginning March 7 – VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Every Wed. 1-4 p.m., appointment required. E-file for free with a $50,000 income limit for wages, income limit is waived off for seniors over 65. Trained tax preparers will do your return.

March 9 – Skype – 10-11:30 a.m. There are so many uses and possibilities with Skype. Educators use Skype to introduce students to authors and scientists, language teachers give lessons, and families miles apart keep in touch using this amazing tool. If you are new to Skype and would like to learn more, come to this class to learn about this free online application and how you can use it best to your advantage.

March 9 – Microsoft Word – Intermediate – 1-3 p.m. Introduction to Microsoft Word or equivalent experience is needed to benefit from this class. This class is intended for people who have already taken Introduction to Microsoft Word and want to take advantage of more Microsoft word options. Or for people comfortable with Microsoft Word who want to extend their knowledge of word. The class will cover indents, tabs, creating lists, and adding breaks and columns in Word. Instructor: Abraham, Clarkson University volunteer.

March 13 – Facebook – 1-3 p.m. For people who do not already have a Facebook account. Are there people in your past you want to reconnect with? Social networking sites may help you find those people from your past or introduce you to other people with similar interests. This class will focus primarily on Facebook; one of the more popular social networking sites where users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Instructor: Adam, Clarkson University volunteer.

March 14 – Line Drawing: shadows self – noon. Terrie Rice, local artist will introduce line drawing using chalk and newsprint. Materials will be provided.

March 15 – Gathering Community Stories – 10 a.m.-noon. Gain a unique perspective on your community's history and cultural identity by gathering oral history interviews. This workshop introduces the layperson to the process of collecting oral histories and focuses on a critical phase of the process, the interview. Library of Congress - Video Conference

March 16 – Managing and Editing Your Photos – 9:30 – 11:30. Want to know the basics of managing the pictures or photos on your computer, or even getting them on there in the first place? This class will take you through the steps of editing photos, saving them in folders where you can organize them, and sending them via email. NCLS instructors.

March 16 – Microsoft Excel – Introduction – 1 -3. Come and learn the basics with the latest version of Excel. Differences between the new version and the older versions (2003, 2007) will be highlighted. NCLS instructors.

March 19 – Introduction to Microsoft Word – 9:30 – 11:30. Class covers opening and saving a word document and select functions under the Home, Page Set-Up and Insert tabs. The second half is dedicated to creating tables, formatting cells etc. By the end of the class, each student will have produced a letter and a table. Instructor - Bob Watkins - Volunteer Trainer

March 21 – Pandora Radio and Spotify – noon. Pandora Radio and Spotify...how to use music available online and recognize music files available for free downloads.

March 22 – Quick Books – 9:30-11 a.m. or 6-7:30 p.m. Each session is a continuation from the previous session. The course runs for 5 consecutive weeks (3/22, 3/29, 4/5, 4/12, 4/19) and covers the basics of company set up, customer invoicing, paying bills, running payroll, completing a bank reconciliation, and generating reports. Participants are encouraged to commit to attending the 5 classes in order to reap the benefits of a complete beginners' overview. Instructor – Mary McGreevy.
