St. Lawrence County unemployment rate remains unchanged for October compared to last year

St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate, the second highest in New York in October, did not change when compared to the same month last year.

The Department of Labor says the rate was 5.7 percent for both October 2016 and 2017. That makes it the second highest in New York state, behind only Bronx County. The number of people receiving unemployment benefits for both months was 2,500. There were 40,900 people employed in the county last month and 40,800 in October 2016, DOL said.

To the east in Franklin County, the rate also remained flat, at 5.2 percent last month and the same month last year. There were 1,000 people receiving benefits both months. There were 18,800 people employed and 18,600 in October 2016, DOL said.

To the west in Jefferson County, the unemployment rate went down to 5.4 percent last month from 5.7 percent in October 2016. There were 2,500 people on the dole last month and 2,600 the same month last year. There were 43,100 people employed there last month and 42,500 in October 2016, DOL said.
