The unemployment rate in St. Lawrence currently stands at 6.0 percent, 1.4 percent lower than the New York state rate.

According to a state Department of Labor report issued this week, the county’s unemployment rate decreased 2.4 percent points since August 2020 when the rate was 8.4 percent as the pandemic shut-down was still affecting multiple industries.

The state unemployment rate is 7.4 percent.

In neighboring counties, the unemployment in Jefferson County is 5.2 percent, down 2.8 percent from 8.0 percent in July 2020. Franklin County’s unemployment rate is 5.0, a drop of 3.3 percent from 8.3 percent in August 2020.

Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.
