North Country Sen. Walczyk says state is 'dysfunctional' after Dems fail to reach deal on budget

Sen. Mark Walczyk, R-Watertown, says the one-party rule in New York is ‘dysfunctional’ after state officials failed to pass a budget on time.

The failure comes for the second-year in a row and after massive hikes in salaries they approved for themselves last year.

In a video statement shared with North Country This Week, Walczyk pointed the finger squarely at Democrats.

“Last Friday they left town without doing a budget. It was due on April 1 and that budget deadline is no surprise to anybody in this town we’ve known it the entire year,” he said. “Then they show up on Monday and today they bring us a one-week extender. And when I say they - the senate is controlled by Democrats. The Assembly is controlled by Democrats. The Governor is a Democrat and one-party rule is dysfunctional in this state.”

He shared news of a budget extender passed today to keep payrolls going as state officials continue to debate how best to spend taxpayer money.

Walczyk said he expected that the extender passed Monday would not be the final one.

“I got this inkling though that when we show up the Monday after Easter, there isn’t going to be a budget,” he said.

Although Walczyk did not comment on what’s causing the holdup, it's been widely reported that Democrat leaders are at odds over potential changes to bail reform and funding for housing.

Walczyk represents a large section of the North Country, including Ogdensburg and the North Western portion of St. Lawrence County.
