CANTON - It has been “an in with the new, and out with old” kind of week for McDonald’s in Canton.

A new restaurant will open Friday in the Price Chopper plaza parking lot, 111 E. Main St., while the former downtown McDonald’s,vacant for more than five years, is possibly destined for demolition to ensure the future of parking at the municipal building.

At a joint meeting Wednesday night, a joint acquisition between the village and town of the 64 Main St. property was announced. The purchase price is $295,000 with a $25,000 down payment that will go toward the purchase price. The cost will be equally shared between the town and village.

"This purchase will be an equal partnership," said Dalton.

The seller is the McDonald's Corporation of Delaware.

The property has been up for sale since McDonald’s closed its doors in 2015

A two-part environmental study will be conducted on the property before a decision is made to demolish the building.

"This property has been on the market for over five years with little to no movement," stated Mayor Michael Dalton. "We see this as an important move to preserve our future for parking and future changes to the municipal building."

McDonald's has owned the current parking area adjacent to the municipal building since opening in downtown Canton in 1977. Ownership of the parking lot is part of the transaction.

Town and village officials have been examining what the future holds for the municipal building. Updates to the building are needed and space has become congested.

Opening up the former McDonald's parcel could allow for expansion or additional parking.
