Winter storm expected to drop 6-12 inches of snow in SLC; wind gusts near 40 mph

A powerful winter storm system will continue to impact the North Country today with gusty winds, periods of heavy snow and mild temperatures for mid-January, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

High wind warnings and advisories continue, along with winter storm warnings and advisories for most of the region, NWS says.

Cooler temperatures arrive later today into tonight, with any precipitation changing to snow showers by tonight, the service says.

A prolonged period of lake effect snow showers with areas of blowing and drifting snow can be anticipated over portions of northern New York tonight into Sunday, forecasters say.

Forecasters predict between 6-12 inches of snow, depending on where you are in the county. Half of the snow is expected to fall overnight, with another half on Sunday, NWS says.

Winds will be around 20 mph for the next day, with gusts as high as 40 mph, the service says. Overnight the low will be around 25 and the daytime high will be near 40.

The forecast through next Friday is as follows:

Sunday

Snow showers, mainly before 5pm. Areas of blowing snow. High near 28. Breezy, with a southwest wind 20 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Sunday Night

A 30 percent chance of snow showers before 7pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 15. Southwest wind 14 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

M.L.King Day

A chance of snow showers before 1pm, then a chance of snow showers after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 22. Southwest wind 14 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Monday Night

A 30 percent chance of snow showers before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. South wind 8 to 11 mph.

Tuesday

Snow showers likely, mainly after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 21. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Tuesday Night

A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11. Southwest wind 7 to 9 mph.

Wednesday

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 19. Southwest wind 9 to 14 mph.

Wednesday Night

Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11. Southwest wind 11 to 13 mph.

Thursday

A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. Southwest wind 11 to 15 mph.

Thursday Night

A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph.

Friday

A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 20. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon.
