TUPPER LAKE – The Wild Center has announced a variety of events during the summer months designed to help people explore the Adirondacks.

Hours of operation from Memorial Day to Labor Day will be daily from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. More information on all of these events can be found at www.wildcenter.org/events.

• Sunday mornings in June & July, 8-10 a.m.: Tweets and Treats, birding and coffee. Join a naturalist on The Wild Center trails every Sunday morning in June and July. Learn the basics of bird identification, stop at the bird blind, search for nests, and maybe even learn a few songs of our summer residents. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxing coffee and snack break on the patio by Greenleaf Pond. This event is free.

• Saturdays, June 18 & July 30, 8:30-11:30 a.m.: Whiteface Mountain Birds & Ecology expedition. The Wild Center, in partnership with ORDA, is pleased to offer naturalist walks on Whiteface Mountain. Join a Wild Center naturalist for an interpretive hike that focuses on mountain habitats and birds along Whiteface Mountain Veteran's Memorial Highway and summit. There is a fee (payable at the Tollhouse) for this event, registration is suggested.

• Saturday July 2, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.: BuzzzFest. An all day festival of fun to kick off the Fourth of July weekend in the Adirondacks. BuzzzFest honors the creatures that make the world go round, from dragonflies to honey bees. And because it's the Fourth, one of the top Beatles bands in the country will be on hand to play four sets, from A Hard Days Night to Abbey Road and every musical stop in between. Enjoy honey BBQ, web cakes, live music and even tempt your taste buds with a variety of bug-a-licous delicacies from nationally renowned insect chef, David George Gordon. Collect bugs and try to stump our insect experts, compete in insect races and learn from butterfly walks and bee keeping demos - even get a free buzz cut on your way in or out.

• Saturdays, July 9 & July 23, 8-10 a.m.: Bloomingdale Bog and Birds expedition. Join a Wild Center naturalist and explore the unique natural history of Adirondack bogs. This large bog wetland, complete with sedge marsh and coniferous woods, provides ample opportunity to see some great boreal birds. This event is free, registration is suggested.

• Thursday July 28, 7:30 p.m.: Lake Placid Sinfonietta. Lake Placid's own Sinfonietta presents a wonderful evening filled with music under the stars in The Wild Center's Great Hall overlooking Greenleaf Pond. A pre-concert, casual "summer picnic" buffet in The Wild Center’s Esplanade Tent on Greenleaf Pond is available. There is a fee for this event, pre-registration is required.

• Thursday, Aug. 11, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.: FlavorFest. Join us for FlavorFest 2011 to celebrate the virtues of eating local food and fare from the Adirondack region. Sample delicious dishes created with locally grown ingredients, local craft beer, and purchase freshly harvested produce from our Farmers Market. Engage with local farmers and chefs, and learn from demonstrations on gardening and cooking, including a special presentation from “The Dirty Life” author Kristen Kimball, the New York journalist who left the city to become a farmer in the Adirondacks. Food crafts, games, festive music and nature programs will all be on the day’s menu for the whole family to enjoy.

• Sunday, Oct. 9, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.: FeatherFest. What do bird migration, live flying raptors, and a one-man steel drum band have in common? They’re all a part of FeatherFest. Help send our migrating birds off in style by dancing to live music from the tropical places where many birds spend the winter. Play party games, get your face painted, then meet live Adirondack birds at our exciting theater show, where you even can see some in flight.
