The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team dropped its second straight game on Saturday by the score of 4-2 in Hamden, CT against nationally-ranked No. 10 Quinnipiac. Kate Wheeler scored a pair of goals for the Bobcats in the third period, while rookie Mel Desrochers and senior assistant captain Karell Emard each had a goal for the Saints.

Quinnipiac improves to 17-9-1 (9-7-0) on the season thanks to its special teams play, while St. Lawrence falls to 12-13-2 (7-8-0).

"They were able to execute on their chances and we didn't," said Saint head coach Chris Wells. "Quinnipiac blocked about twenty shots in the third, and when we were able to get shots through, (Victoria) Vigilanti was there to keep them out."

The two conference foes battled throughout a scoreless first period that saw the home team own a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. However, it was St. Lawrence that would take a 1-0 lead at 3:32 of the second period on Desrochers' third goal of the season.

The unassisted tally was followed less than 3:00 minutes later by the tying goal from the Bobcats. Quinnipiac evened the game at 1-1 on the power play at 6:11, when Melissa Perry netted her second goal of the year on first-year student Caitlyn Lahonen. Jordan Elkins and Kelley Davies assisted on the tying goal.

Kelly Babstock, one of the top-3 scorers in ECAC Hockey, would give the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage heading into the second intermission. With St. Lawrence skating on a power play try, Babstock scored a short-handed goal at 15:55 to give the home team its first lead. The unassisted tally was Babstock's 22nd of the season.

Though the Saints finished with a narrow 6-5 edge in shots in the third period, Wheeler continued Quinnipiac's momentum with back-to-back goals only 1:34 apart to put the game away. Wheeler's first of the game and 11th of the season came at 8:01 of the third, with assists going to Brittany Lyons and Elkins. She followed at 9:35 to put the Bobcats on top 4-1, with Davies picking up her second helper of the game.

St. Lawrence played without a goaltender throughout the majority of the final minutes of the game looking to cut into its three-goal deficit. Emard would tack on an extra-attacker goal at 18:50, with an assist going to sophomore Brooke Fernandez, to pull the Saints back to within two at 4-2. However, the team was unable to get another shot past Vigilanti, who closed with 21 saves to pick up the victory. Lahonen was credited with 23 stops in the loss.

Quinnipiac closed with a 27-23 advantage in shots on goal, and won the special teams battle as well. The Bobcats were 1-of-2 on the power play and held St. Lawrence to an 0-for-4 mark with the extra skater.

St. Lawrence will begin a five-game home stand next weekend, when the team hosts Colgate and nationally-ranked No. 2 Cornell on Friday and Saturday, February 4 and 5.
