POTSDAM — The village of Potsdam will be purchasing electricity for its municipal buildings from a local hydro power source.
The village board of trustees voted unanimously at its May 13 meeting to authorize Village Mayor Alex Jacobs Wilke to execute a contract with Northern Power & Light of Saranac Lake to sell power to the municipality through hydro power credits.
Northern Power & Light works with small hydro facilities throughout the region to secure power for local businesses and residents, typically at the same prices as National Grid, but offers a municipal discount program, Emmett Smith, Northern Power and Light’s CEO, was quoted previously.
One of the firms Northern Power & Light partners with is Sissonville Hydro, owned by Glens Falls-based Boralex Hydro Operations, Inc., just downstream from the village. Northern Power also runs its own power facility Azure Mountain Power (AMP) in St Regis Falls; and partners with The Schroon River Dam and Powerhouse located in Warrensburg.
The firm recently secured a similar agreement with the town of Potsdam to supply that municipality’s electricity. The company has similar municipal agreements with Glens Falls and Saranac Lake.
The village will be partnering with the town through the Potsdam Climate Smart Communities Task Force on a community information program about sustainable local hydro availability.
The resolution approved by the village board May 13 stated that the agreement may “unlock” up to $15,000 in grant money to be used for Climate Smart Community initiatives.
