POTSDAM – A homeless man who allegedly broke into the Potsdam Humane Society to free a dog several days ago has now been arrested and locked up for a second burglary at a village residence.
Village police arrested Thomas P. Mauck, 48, formerly of Lemont, Ill., for second-degree burglary, a class C felony, after he was located inside the residence. They are continuing their investigation into that break-in.
In addition, Mauck was charged with third-degree burglary, a class D felony, third-degree criminal mischief, a class E felony, and petit larceny, concluding a several-day investigation into a burglary at the Potsdam Humane Society.
Police report Mauck had allegedly cut and damaged screens, cages, and an entry door to break into the shelter and steal a dog kept there as a stray.
Mauck was arraigned in Potsdam Village Court by Justice Welch and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility on $5,000 bail.
