MASSENA -- Two Board of Education trustees will sit on the school’s Title VII committee, which along with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe will craft and education and services plans for Native American students
Trustees Rhonda Rodriguez and William Sommerfield will be among the committee that meets with the tribe twice per year.
Title VII also comes with federal funding for the district once they meet the requirements in the deal.
The district’s responsibilities include:
• Submitting annual reports of results of the program and services offered pursuant to the agreement
• Sending a list of all Native American students to the tribe
• Submit Affirmative Action reports
• Address “issues of respect, tolerance, and dignity for others and awareness and sensitivity,” the contract says
• Integrating Mohawk and Iroquois history and culture lessons where appropriate, including Mohawk language or culture to Native American students as an elective course
• Giving cultural sensitivity and awareness training to administrators, faculty and staff in coordination with the tribe
• Providing a certified literacy teacher exclusively for Native American students in need of remediation, with the primary focus in elementary language arts and math. Funding, when available, isn’t to exceed $80,000 annually, the contract says
• Creating what the deal calls a “pipeline” to help qualified Native Americans apply for district jobs and place Native American student teachers
• Joining with tribal representatives to meet with the Mohawk community each year to discuss educational issues and answer questions
