OGDENSBURG – The winner and the loser of the Republican primary for Ogdensburg City Judge will both still be on the November ballot, and now a write-in candidate seems to be emerging.
Herbert Becker, CEO of the former Hacketts stores, now Ogdensburg Outlet Center, says he is being urged to run as a write-in candidate against William Small, part-time judge and winner of the GOP primary, and Mary Rain of Potsdam, who lost the primary but who will still be on the ballot lines of the Conservative, Independence and Independent Parties.
Becker did not say he would pursue a full campaign as a write-in candidate, nor did he say he rejected the idea.
“I think it has a lot to do with people seeing me as a person dedicated to what I’m doing,” Becker said, “so they think I’d make a good judge.”
Becker has been working to get the former Hacketts chain of hardware, sports and general stores out of bankruptcy. The stores have been struggling since credit became tight and an apparent capital over-extension left Hacketts without the means to pay creditors and get new stock into its stores, before Becker was hired as CEO.
