Swimmers support Hospice, raising over $20,000

More than 40 take part in the 16th annual Swim-a-Mile

Posted

NORWOOD -- On Saturday, Aug. 1, 41 swimmers of all ages gathered at Norwood Beach with a common goal: to raise money for Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley at the 16th annual Swim-A-Mile event. Together, their dedication and fundraising efforts raised $20,388.49, all of which will help support friends, family members and neighbors across St. Lawrence County.

A growing family tradition welcomes youth swimmers

An exciting addition to the long-standing event was the introduction of the Mini Swim and Hospice Juniors groups. These new opportunities allowed six children between the ages of 4 and 11 to participate in their first Swim-a-Mile by either enjoying time in the roped-off beach area or swimming one-eighth of a mile.

A generous grant from the Adirondack Community Foundation covered all registration costs for the youth swimmers. In addition to welcoming the youngest participants, multiple families participated together, raising money for Hospice.

It is exciting to see this event continue to grow as a family-friendly tradition.

Volunteers, donations appreciated

A special thank you to the Victims Assistance Center-Child Advocacy Center for donating life jackets, as well as to volunteers from Liberty Utilities, Norwood Lake Association, Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad, Hospice Board of Directors and Clarkson University PA Program.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to Town of Potsdam Recreation Director Michelle Garrow for her tireless efforts every year in organizing the event and to her lifeguards and safety boaters who helped ensure a safe and successful event.

Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley extends its heartfelt gratitude to every swimmer, volunteer, sponsor, and supporter who helped make the 16th annual Swim a Mile a tremendous success.
