POTSDAM – The SUNY Potsdam men’s golf team finished first Tuesday afternoon at the three-team Bears Fall Invitational at the par-72 Potsdam Country Club.
The Bears, who shot a 306 as a team, were led by juniors Shane Laurie (Canton, N.Y.) and Benton Sullivan (Massena, N.Y.), who finished 1-2 individually in the tournament.
Clarkson finished second with a score of 329, while Oswego took third with a total of 331 strokes.
In taking home medalist honors, Laurie fired a 70, five strokes better than Sullivan, who was also the runner-up at the same tournament a year ago.
SUNY Potsdam Junior Lee Shippee (Corinth, N.Y.) shot a 79, while sophomore Shawn Thomas (Alexandria Bay, N.Y.) carded an 82. Senior Ken Rhodes (Cochecton, N.Y.) rounded out Bears scoring with an 84.
For Clarkson, freshman Rob Wood (Westford, VT) paced his team with a five-over par 77 to lead the Golden Knights to a second-place finish.
Wood placed third overall with his 77, trailing a pair of golfers from Potsdam. In fourth place was Joel Bailey (Boonville, NY), while Brendan LaFleur (Sandown, NH) was third for the Knights with a score of 84. Mike Wiegand (New Hartford, NY) and Taylor Dwyer (Ballston Spa, NY) rounded out Clarkson's five golfers with scores of 90 and 92, respectively.
