POTSDAM -- The SUNY Potsdam Department of Theatre and Dance will present playwright John Cariani's first play, "Almost, Maine," from Dec. 6 to 8.
The play takes place on a cold, clear, moonless Friday night in the middle of winter. All is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the Northern Lights hover in the star-filled sky above, residents of Almost find themselves falling in and out of love, in unexpected and often hilarious ways.
Knees are bruised; hearts are broken. Love is lost, found and confounded. But the bruises heal and the hearts mend -- almost. "Almost, Maine" has been described as "a comic, romantic roundelay" by the Wall Street Journal, "a wooly midwinter nights dream" by the Dallas Observer, "love in the time of frostbite" by the New York Times, "a gem" by Florida Weekly, "an unapologetically romantic fable" by the Arizona Republic and "an effervescent yet deeply felt tragicomedy" by the Melbourne Age.
"Almost, Maine" inventively explores the mysteries of the human heart, touching audiences with laughter, heartbreak and hope.
"Almost, Maine" is written for four actors who portray multiple characters over the duration of the show. SUNY Potsdam students Mackenzie Barmen, Gina Bilardi and Jordan Funk will co-direct and co-star in "Almost, Maine." Students Vinnie Loucks and Elizabeth Munz will take care of the technical aspects of the show, which includes costumes, set and stage management. Loucks will also co-star in the production.
Performances of the SUNY Potsdam production of "Almost, Maine" will be offered from Thursday, Dec. 6 to Saturday, Dec. 8, with shows at 7:30 p.m. nightly in the Blackbox Theater in Satterlee Hall. General admission tickets for this production are $5. Tickets will be available for sale at the door. There will be no sign language interpretation for this slow, but the theater is wheelchair-accessible.
