MALDEN, Mass. -- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to Tufts University Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum II in Malden, Mass.
The Roos and Jumbos were tied 0-0 after one period of play as sophomore goalie Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) stymied Tufts with 19 of his 43 saves in the game.
Both teams traded goals in the second stanza and that’s how the score would stand heading into the final period.
Tufts struck first in the second stanza when James Randaccio scored at the 11:39 mark, but SUNY Canton came back and tied the game 1-1 after senior forward Chris Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) scored his first goal of the season from freshman forward Nils Semjonovs (Liepaja, Latvia) at the 14:27 mark.
The Roos took their first lead of the day, surging ahead 2-1 at the 12:06 mark of the third period when sophomore defenseman JR Lafferty ( Williamstown, N.J.) netted his fourth goal of the season and team-leading third power play score off assists from sophomore defenseman Sean Gallagher (Cape Cod, Mass.) and senior forward Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario).
The Jumbos tied the game just over a minute later off the stick of Aiden Hartigan and then Kyle Gallegos scored the game-winning goal short-handed with 5:48 left in regulation.
Derek Metcalfe made 21 saves to earn his first collegiate win for Tufts.
