CANTON — St. Lawrence University and five other colleges and universities will receive a three-year $1.25 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support an international initiative aimed at strengthening global education.
The other universities that comprise the New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium are Colgate University, Hamilton College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Skidmore College and Union College.
The grant will help the schools “expand the global aspects of their curricula and engaging students and faculty in the study of global issues, both at the home campuses and abroad.”
The consortium’s proposal to the Mellon Foundation noted the importance of providing students with an international perspective as part of the undergraduate experience.
Components of the program will include The New York Six Update-Global Collective; study abroad collaboration; language learning groups in the less-frequently taught languages; the New York Six International Student Community; and the Connected Consortium Partnership, which will enable the use of technology-based interaction through a previous collaboration between New York Six libraries. The grant will also enable the New York Six to hire a full-time project manager for the initiative.
