MASSENA -- Due to limited funding, the St. Lawrence River Research Education Fund has cancelled its summer 2013-award cycle.
The deadline for the next round of funding will be Jan. 1.
The St. Lawrence River Research Education Fund was established as part of the 2003 relicensing of the New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project, located in Massena, the fund provides financial support for environmental research and education projects relating to the ecology of the St. Lawrence River watershed.
The grants are generated each year from the annual interest on the NYPA relicensing funds commitment to establish SLRREF. each year the SLRREF may award funding for proposals at either, or both, the January and July deadlines, depending on available funds.
Since SLRREF’s founding in 2007, 22 projects have been approved for nearly $291,200 in NYPA funding through SLRREF.
With matching grants of more than $286,100 from others, total funding for the projects is approximately $577,300.
The latest round of grants was awarded in March, with NYPA funding, through SLRREF, nearly $47,500 for projects submitted by Clarkson University, St. Lawrence University, Save the River and the Oceanic Research Group.

An outreach campaign mailing concerning the SLRREF application process for the Jan. 1 deadline will be launched this fall.
To be eligible for financial support from SLRREF, proposed projects must pertain to the St. Lawrence River, the adjoining terrestrial features or a tributary within the St. Lawrence River Valley.
