CANTON -- St. Lawrence County legislators passed two resolutions declaring October awareness campaigns for domestic violence and lead poisoning.
One of the resolutions declares October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The resolution notes that the St. Lawrence County Domestic Violence Task Force “has been working to bring changes in community norms which support the development of health relationships and families in our communities.”
It also notes the task force’s lead agency, Renewal House, is planning activities throughout the county to highlight the awareness campaign with the theme “Seek Justice | Enforce Victims’ Rights | Inspire Hope.”
The board also declared Oct. 25 to 31 Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.
The resolution notes that low levels of lead exposure affect children’s brains, and health problems caused by elevated blood lead levels “are often invisible and irreversible in children.”
The resolution also points to county Public Health Department efforts to stop lead poisoning, such as encouraging parents to have young children screened at lead by ages 1 and 2.
It also says “increased awareness of childhood lead exposure is critically important so that parents, health care providers, housing authorities, building and construction interests, educators, and others can work together to prevent children from being exposed to lead in the environment.”
