GENEVA -- The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team advances all of its doubles teams in the opening day of the Mary Hosking Invitational Saturday.
Leading the way were senior captain Shannon Murphy and sophomore Elkie Vandenbeemt who each went 3-0 on the day.
In A flight doubles, Murphy teamed up with sophomore Anna Young to defeat Molly Goodman and Rachel Suresky (UR) in a tight 8-6 match. Vandenbeemt and first-year student Morgan McNeal also earned a win as they topped Carly Siegel and Allison Vizgaitis (Ithaca) by the score of 8-5.
Sophomores Samantha Miller and Suzanne Weinstein also posted a victory in doubles, beating Ami Petosa and Hannah Teter (Nazareth) 8-4 to advance to the B flight quarterfinal.
In the A singles draw, Vandenbeemt advances to tomorrow's semifinal after beating Marylen Stantos (Geneseo) 8-3 in the quarterfinal. The Hilton Head Island, SC native topped Cara Genbauffe (UR) 8-1 in the opening round.
Murphy also advances to the semifinal as she earned an 8-6 win over Abdus Salam (Geneseo) in the B flight quarterfinal after stopping Kate O'Connor (WS) 8-3 in the opening round.
The Saints are back in action this morning when the draws resume.
