First-year student Kelly Legg scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team completed its weekend sweep with a 76-70 overtime victory over RPI on Saturday afternoon in the Burkman Gymnasium.
St. Lawrence, which had four players score in double-figures, improves to 15-4 with a 6-3 mark in the Liberty League. RPI falls to 9-11 overall with a 5-4 record in the conference.
"It was a great win for our program because of the character we showed when things weren't going well," said St. Lawrence Head Coach Dan Roiger. "I am proud of the way we dug in, never gave up and found a way to claw our way back into the game."
Sophomore Erica Spera joined Legg with a double-double, recording 13 points and 14 rebounds, while co-captains Katie Edgerton and Casey Capello contributed 16 and 10 points, respectively. RPI was led by Linda Larsen with 18 points and Sarah Wetmore added a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The two teams battled throughout the first 20:00, which saw four ties and five lead changes. RPI took its largest lead of the half on a traditional three-point play by junior Hillary McKinley as she was fouled and then converted the free throw. Sophomore Erica Spera was then fouled and made two free throws of her own, cutting the deficit to four heading into the locker rooms (31-27).
In the second half, the Saints tied the game 35-35 before first-year student Katie Murray gave them the lead with a 3-pointer at 15:32. RPI's Lauren Hayes sparked an Engineer run as she made a layup and was fouled, making the free throw to bring the score to 41-38 at 14:48. RPI stretched that lead to as many as 12 points as Larsen scored 11 of her 18 points in the second half.
First-year student Cassie St. Hilaire provided a spark for the Saints, taking the ball to the basket and forcing several RPI players into foul trouble. The home team chipped away at the deficit with back-to-back threes by Edgerton and Legg until Spera drew a foul and sank both free throws to put the Saints up 63-62 with 2:00 minutes to play in regulation.
