SLC People Project provides new sneakers for area students

HEUVELTON -- In early March, the St. Lawrence Country People Project delivered brand new athletic footwear to interested school districts within St. Lawrence County.

Spring is a time when children want to get outside and play after a long winter, but many of them have outgrown or worn out their back to school sneakers, the organization said in a press release.

The SLCPP in collaboration with Operation Warm, was able to donate approximately 400 pairs of sneakers to local elementary students.

The non-profit organization has been able to donate winter coats for the past four years but this is the first time for the athletic shoes, the press release said.

“Our students are looking forward to many opportunities to play sports, use the walking trail, and get outside and enjoy the warm weather with these shoes on their feet.” said a Heuvelton school representative.

“The response from the districts has been really positive!” said Mary Wills, Executive Director for the SLCPP. “I have been told they are flying off the shelves and the kids are very excited to pick from all the bright colors.  Our goal is to help make life better for the residents of SLC.  If that includes making children smile and giving parents one less thing to worry about, that’s fabulous.”

Donations are always greatly appreciated and can be made out to SLC People Project, PO Box 763, 431 State St. Ogdensburg, NY 13669.

The People Project is a non-profit organization and a registered 501 (c)(3). The mission of the organization is to strengthen education, along with health and wellness and the economy in St. Lawrence County, and advance its residents by coordinating community initiatives, activities, and resources for all.
