CANTON -- With September fast approaching, county legislators are commemorating the 25th anniversary of the terrorist acts of Sept. 11, 2001.

The attacks were the deadliest on U.S. soil since the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, leaving 2,977 victims, including 343 firefighters, 23 police officers and 37 Port Authority officers.

The attacks began when hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m.

Shortly thereafter, terrorists hijacked United Airlines Flight 175, striking the South Tower at 9:03 a.m.

American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m., followed by United 93, which was the fourth and final passenger jet to be commandeered by terrorists that day.

Flight 93 was believed to have been destined for the Capitol building or White House, however passengers stormed the cockpit before the aircraft crashed just north of Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The toll of the day is still being felt, however, as many first responders and citizens of New York City endure significant medical issues from the dust and particulates that filled the air that day.

"These horrific events have affected Americans, and continue to take a toll as thousands of people, especially first responders, have developed and died from diseases and illnesses related to exposure to toxic dust, smoke, and debris at Ground Zero and in lower Manhattan," the resolution reads.

County officials noted the attacks have impacted daily life across the world, including with the use of enhanced airport security measures.

"It is important that we remember the September 11, 2001 attacks and the

spirit of the American people, one of the best ways to show the world that the people of the United States will always stand tall and proud," they wrote.
