NORWOOD – At this year’s Earth Day observance at Norwood-Norfolk Central School, students were entertained by Shriners and their clown bicycles, the group sang songs and participated in hands-on events, answered questions, and won prizes donated by the PTSA.
This year’s Earth Day Committee consisted of 8 faculty members, Mrs. Yandoh, Mrs. Haseneaur, Mrs. Brothers, Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Harvey, Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. Adams and Mr. Butler. The theme this year was “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.”
Mr. Butler organized the pull tab collection this school year. Students in kindergarten through fourth grade collected just under 80 pounds, which amounts to about $680.
Shriners Harold Brothers, Bob Squires, Jim Boyce, Phil McDonald and Mark Decar entertained the children by riding their homemade clown bicycles, which they are so well known for. Mrs. Regan’s class received a certificate from the organization for collecting the most pull tabs, an amazing 104 containers of them, the equivalent of seven garbage bags full or 140 pounds. Mr. Brothers thanked the children and explained to them why this event is so extremely beneficial to the Shriners. The proceeds are donated to local children’s hospitals.
Ms. Ashley Tranello educated the group with a presentation and a hands on recycling activity. She is a senior at SUNY Potsdam who is majoring in community health.
The celebration concluded with a sing a long, led by music teacher Mrs. Harvey.
The students enjoyed ice-cream sandwiches at the end of the day that were donated by the Norwood-Norfolk Teachers Association.
