FOWLER – Several people have been injured in an incident at the zinc mine in Fowler.
Details are few, but two people were taken by Gouverneur Rescue to Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s emergency room, and several went by car to Gouverneur Hospital, according to Gouverneur Rescue Director of Operations Mark Deavers.
The exact number of those injured or the extent of their injuries is not known. Deavers said from what he has heard so far, none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
There is also no word yet as to the nature of the incident.
The Titan Mining Corporation Empire State Mine officially opened the zinc mine in Fowler June 12, though it has been producing zinc since early this spring.
Titan is a Canadian-based zinc exploration and development company which has as its principal asset the Empire State Mine southeast of Gouverneur.
The mine property has changed hands several times since operations began about 100 years ago. Zinc mining there began in 1917. Production ceased between 2001 and 2005.
Titan Mining resumed zinc mining this year.
