DEKALB –A house at 631 Old State Road has been declared a total loss following a fire that swept through the structure Monday night, according to St. Lawrence County fire investigators.
Seven fire departments responded and a Hermon Fire Department tanker truck slid off the road due to ice while on the way to fight the blaze. The driver was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital for evaluation.
The DeKalb and Richville fire departments responded at 5:49 p.m. to the property owned and occupied by Eli La Shelter and two others.
Mutual aid was provided by the Rensselaer Falls, Hermon, Heuvelton, Gouverneur and Canton fire departments. The Rensselaer Falls Rescue Squad also responded.
The nearby Corning plan opened up the draft site to provide a water supply, fire officials said.
Cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
The Gouverneur, Edwards, Morristown and Morley fire departments were on standby during the blaze.
The DeKalb firefighters returned to the station at 10:56 p.m.
