To the Editor:
The 22nd annual Seniorama was held Aug. 14 at the Roos House, SUNY Canton.
The beautiful facility was enjoyed by all. This year we had one hundred vendors. Area hospitals, banks and credit unions, county agencies, home care businesses, insurance companies, and nursing homes were all in attendance. Also, optometrists, chiropractors, entertainment organizations, pharmacies, political representatives, public utilities, senior organizations, associations, and support services for seniors.
A huge thank you to all the vendors and businesses that took out ads in our booklet, and those that contributed the over one hundred door prizes that were given out throughout the day. Your continued support for seniors is greatly appreciated.
Seniors were able to talk one-on-one with the many participants and received information and goodies about each.
Thank you to the Canton VFW for leading off our opening ceremony, to Dick Cota for leading the pledge, to Diane Foote for a beautiful national anthem, and to Rob Schirmer of Hospice for his thoughts and opening prayer. Thank you to Marie “Dolly” Kirwan for your chair yoga demonstration, to Ed Gordon who taught us where and how to do “bargain shopping” in St. Lawrence County, and to Neil Johnson who talked about the SOAR program at SUNY Potsdam. A big thanks to the Shermans and Friend, Bernie and Jim Sherman, and Reeves Adair for filling in with music after “Senior Idol” had to be cancelled.
Congratulations to the raffle winners Pat Weaver, first place; Ruth Smutz, second place; and Sylvia Despaw, third place.
Seniorama 2013 would not have been a success without the help from all the committee members for the last six months, and the chapter members who helped fill in the holes on the 14th.
The North Country chapter of the state Senior Action Council brings this health and information fair to the area each year to help keep seniors informed. We are a not-for-profit grassroots membership organization made up of individuals and organizations with an interest in improving the lives of senior citizens.
We meet the first Thursday of the month, except July and August, at 10 a.m. at the Best Western in Canton. Anyone 18 and older can belong. For information contact me at 265-4464.
