St. Lawrence University's Caroline Bailey tallied a season-high five points on three goals and two assists, while Addie Cunningham turned in a 12-save performance to lead the Saints' women's lacrosse team past Clarkson University 10-8 in Potsdam, NY on Wednesday afternoon.
The Saints, who also got multi-point games from Hannah Calvelli (3g) and Carly VanTassel (2g,1a) improve to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League. Meanwhile, Clarkson falls to 4-9 (1-4) despite finishing even in shots (24-24) and with the advantages in both ground balls (25-20) and draw controls (11-7).
Abby Doyle led the Golden Knights with three goals while Christine Wright added two goals, an assist and a team-high four ground balls. St. Lawrence's Mackenzie Collins had a game-high five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers and Kiera Taussig had a team-high three draw controls.
St. Lawrence used a big first half to seize control of the North Country showdown, opening up an 8-2 lead at halftime. Calvelli scored the opening two goals of the game only 1:46 apart, and though Cassie Grace got Clarkson on the board to make it a 2-1 game, the Saints rattled off four straight goals for a 6-1 edge. The run started with Taussig's seventh of the year, while Calvelli, Chloe Knapp and VanTassel followed for the five-goal lead.
Paige Fayette's 27th goal of the season pulled Clarkson within four at 6-2 with 5:25 remaining in the half, but the Saints scored twice in the final 48 seconds to push the lead to 8-2 at the break. Bailey scored her seventh of the year on Kara DiNatale, while VanTassel capped the scoring with three seconds left in the half for the six-goal lead.
Clarkson opted to pull DiNatale after she made six saves in the first half, replacing her with Dani Tani. The Golden Knights responded with a big second half to climb back into contention. After Doyle and Bailey exchanged goals, Wright and Jessica Budaj scored back-to-back man-up goals in 43 seconds to make it a 9-5 game with 22:39 remaining.
Bailey would give St. Lawrence an insurance goal with 20:37 to play for a 10-5 lead, while Cunningham began to shine with eight second half saves to solidify the win. Though Doyle would make it 10-7 with 5:36 left behind consecutive goals, the Saints were able to protect the lead and only allow Wright's unassisted goal in the final minute to cap the game's scoring at 10-8.
Tani finished with one save in the second half for Clarkson, which held a 14-3 edge in shots on goal in the second half.
St. Lawrence, which remains in contention for a postseason berth, will host Bard College on Friday, April 18 at Hall-Leet Stadium at 4:00pm.
