Katie Gallagher netted 12 points and Katie Frederick grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds, but the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fell to RIT 63-54 in conference play on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, New York.
Second to Gallagher, Annabella Pugliese was the only other double-digit scorer for the Scarlet and Brown this afternoon with 11 points. Pugliese also added seven rebounds. Meghan Hynes and Cara Waterson added eight points each.
The Saints jumped out to an 11-3 lead over the Tigers with a jump shot from Gallagher midway through the first frame. RIT pushed back with back-to-back 3-pointers from Jessica Glaz to bring the game within one after the first ten minutes.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game when Sabrina Wolfe launched a 3-pointer with just under eight minutes to play in the second quarter. Both teams would battle back-and-forth adding two more ties midway through the quarter. A jump shot from Wolfe knotted the game at 29, but a 3-pointer from Pugliese and a layup from Frederick put the Saints on top 34-29 at halftime.
St. Lawrence maintained the lead up until the three minute mark of the third frame, but Glaz and Tara Lynch put the Tigers back on top for the remainder of the game.
Pugliese brought the game within two points with 5:11 to play in the fourth quarter, but a seven-point run from RIT sealed the win for the Tigers.
"It was a good DIII basketball game today," said head coach Dan Roiger. "RIT deserved to win because they made the critical shots and we weren't able to match them. In the second half we just couldn't shoot the ball. We didn't run good offense, therefore, we settled for low percentage shots. The moment got pretty big for us and that's part of the maturation for this team. We analyze, learn and go get better!"
RIT was led by Cori Okada with 19 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the floor, and four rebounds, while Lynch added 17 points and four rebounds. Glaz shot 4-for-8 from the arc, recording 13 points and grabbing six rebounds.
After today's result the Saints fell to 14-6 on the season and 9-4 in Liberty League play, while RIT improved to 17-3 and 11-2.
St. Lawrence will travel to Union and Ithaca on February 9-10 for their last regular season weekend on the road.
