Saints take 7th in Giant Slalom at Bates Carnival

The St. Lawrence University men's and women's alpine ski teams opened the 2012 EISA carnival season on Friday, as the Saints competed in the giant slalom at Sunday River. Junior Ashley-Kate Durham earned a 12th place finish in the women's race, as both squads were seventh in the team standings.

Durham's combined time of 2:36.32 landed the Timmins, ON native her 16th collegiate top-20 showing. Classmate Ann West was 24th in the opening race of the year, while first-year student Allison Visconti capped the scoring at 67.0 points in 29th position.

Sophomore Caroline Barry finished in 33rd place, while senior Mackenzie Irwin and first-year Hannah Kadah did not finish their second runs.

On the men's side, senior Scott Houser was the top St. Lawrence finisher in the GS with a time of 2:34.91 for 24th place overall. Fellow senior Jeremy Lawless and rookie Loudon Fruth finished in 27th and 28th place, respectively, completing the scoring at 55.0 points.

Also representing the Scarlet and Brown in the men's event were sophomore Dustin Martin (DNF 1st) and senior captain Matt Dodge (DQ).

The University of Vermont won the men's and women's events with 141.0 and 138.0 points, respectively. Kristina Riis-Johannessen of UVM won the women's individual title in 2:31.30, while fellow Catamount Bobby Farrell won the men's race in 2:27.55.

The Saints will be in action again tomorrow, Saturday, January 21st as the teams compete in the slalom at the Bates Carnival.
