POTSDAM – The Potsdam Public Museum, 2 Park St. will open the Ruth Haley Collection of Postcards exhibit on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Ruth Haley (1912-2009) was a guidance counselor at Potsdam High School from 1961 to 1979. The postcards in the exhibition were mostly sent to her by her students when they went traveling, or she acquired others when she traveled herself. Featured are postcards from the United States, Europe, and South America, dating from the 1930's to the 1970's.
In 1964, the senior class of the high school dedicated that year's yearbook to her, and this dedication is also included in the new exhibit. Haley was also the high school's adviser to the local chapter of the National Merit Society, and a photo of this activity is also shown. In addition, she was an avid hockey fan, cheering on Potsdam High School, Clarkson University, and St. Lawrence University teams.
The postcards in this display were donated to the museum by Bruce Buchanan of Potsdam. He discovered them in an old trunk of Miss Haley's that he acquired at auction with the intent of restoring it.
The postcard attached is a rare "Circular" postcard of Rome, Italy, circa 1975.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A $1 donation is suggested.
