(Marcy, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women’s soccer team dropped a close contest at SUNYIT Wednesday night losing to the Wildcats 3-2.
The Roos got off to a terrific start when junior Melissa Campoverde (Forest Hills, N.Y.) netted the game’s first goal less than three minutes into the opening half. Campoverde found herself in a one-on-one situation with SUNYIT goalie Margaret Werenczak and her well-placed shot sailed just past Werenczak’s lunging effort.
SUNY Canton (7-10-1) scored again on their second shot of the game in the 23rd minute when Campoverde sent a nice cross to freshman Brittany Pierce (Madrid, N.Y.), who buried a shot for a 2-0 Roos lead. The Wildcats answered two minutes later when Stephanie Wurz scored from Amanda Bohne to trim the visiting team’s lead in half, 2-1. SUNYIT evened the score in the 36th minute off a goal from Jamie Elderbroom and the score remained 2-2 at halftime.
The Wildcats netted the game-winning goal in the 74th minute when Dakota Hanley scored to push the home team ahead for good at 3-2.
Sophomore goalie Laura Pratt (Binghamton, N.Y.) had nine saves for the Roos and Werenczak finished with three saves.
The Roos play their final regular season game on Monday, Oct. 29 at SUNY ESF at 7 p.m.
