Randolph Center, VT – The SUNY Canton women's basketball team used four scorers in double figures and a pair of double-doubles to upend host Vermont Tech, 71-66, Wednesday evening.
The Roos started the game off strong scoring nine of the contest's first 11 points as four different players made baskets. Vermont Tech used a 7-0 run with five minutes left in the opening half to trim the Roo lead to 23-22.
SUNY Canton retaliated with a 9-0 spurt that included five points from Joelle Percy (Black River, NY) and a basket each from Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, NY) and Zoey Smith (Adams, NY). The Roos led 35-25 at intermission.
Percy led all players with 11 points in the opening stanza, while Terrance, Janelle Bradish (Massena, NY) and Alicia Uhlein (Watertown, NY) each netted six points. Kaitlin Lyford paced the Knights with nine points.
The Roos (6-15) opened their largest lead of the game at 11 points 36 seconds into the second half after Percy knocked down a jump shot. The Knights chipped away at the lead eventually getting within 55-54 with 7:30 to play. Terrance netted five straight points including an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Roos a cushion once again at 63-54.
Vermont Tech continued to show its resiliency climbing back to get within a one-possession ball game with 1:49 to play, but a made field goal from Brianna Sayer (Hermon, NY) helped as the Roos hold on for the 71-66 victory.
Percy finished with a team-high 20 points, while Sayer had 17, 13 of which came after intermission. Terrance and Bradish both finished with double-doubles as SUNY Canton outrebounded Vermont Tech 23-16 on the offensive glass. Bradish had 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Terrance posted 13 points and ripped down 11 boards.
Ama Baker netted a game-high 23 points and 10 assists, while Paige Wells hauled down 17 rebounds to go with 16 points. Lyford was the other double figure scorer for the Knights as she tallied 19.
These two teams will have a rematch when they square off Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Roos House.
