(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women’s ice hockey team was beaten by Stevenson University 9-1 Friday night at Roos House in Canton.
Freshman goalie Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.) turned aside 46 shots, including several terrific breakaway attempts by the Mustangs in each period. The Roos, playing their first game of the second semester, dropped to 3-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 on their home ice.
Freshman forward Karley Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y.) scored her sixth goal of the season for SUNY Canton at the 7:23 mark of the second period. Cree gathered in a loose puck at the blue line and skated in all alone on Stevenson goalie Stassi Nelson, and after a quick fake, flipped the puck over Nelson’s blocker and into the back of the net. Cree now has six goals and four assists for 10 points, good for second on the team behind freshman Grace Lyon (Winthrop, N.Y.), who has nine goals and 11 points.
The Roos had another good opportunity late in the third period when Nelson blocked an initial shot and the puck slipped behind her but just stopped shy of the goal line.
Mackenzie Taggart scored twice for the Mustangs, and Nelson finished with 11 saves.
The Roos showed off their brand new uniforms on Saturday that were delivered over the Christmas break. The sharp, new home jerseys are white with blue trim and numbers outlined in Vegas Gold with a block "C" on the front, alos outlined in Vegas Gold, and blue pants.
The two teams will face off again on Saturday to complete the two-game series starting at 1 p.m. in Roos House.
