Roos open play In Oswego volleyball tournament

Oswego, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team played the first two games of their four-game series in the Oswego State Tournament on Friday evening. The tournament features seven teams. SUNY Canton dropped a pair of matches to Elmira and Oswego, both 3-0. Shea Norton (Batavia, NY) provided 21.5 points on the day, while freshman outside hitter Alyssa Almada (Canyon Lake, CA) stepped up versus Elmira to account for 16 assists in her first collegiate appearance.

Match 1 –

In the first game of the day for SUNY Canton, the Roos took on the Elmira Soaring Eagles. SUNY Canton led in the first set 22-20, and battled to take a 24-23 lead, but Elmira took three consecutive points to take that set at 26-24. Jenna Roat (Penfield, NY) and Skye Hansen (Rochester, NY) recorded 11 and six digs, respectively. Norton and Hansen led the team as they combined for 17.5 points in the contest. Melissa McMaster (Pittsford, NY)added another five points. Alyssa Almada (Canyon Lake, CA) made her collegiate debut and provided 16 assists, along with two points and two digs.

Elmira's Taylor Kaznowski, Natalie Schnieder, and Tiara John spurred the Soaring Eagles offense by combining for 37.5 points. Savannah Terry added another nine points. Through their five games this season prior to this matchup, EC's service game has been one of the most dangerous in the Empire 8 Conference. Elmira led the Empire 8 with 3.53 aces per set average. They continued that trend by notching 11 assists versus the Roos.

Facing the host Oswego Lakers in the afternoon, the Roos kept getting closer and closer each set, but lost in three straight – (25-18/25-20/26-24). Again, it was Norton performance wwhich led the team, as she accounted for 11 points and 10 digs. Peyton Robinson (Bloomfield, NY) returned to form with 23 assists and seven digs. Roat tallied 23 assists, while Sydney Uthe and Jocelyn Racette each provided six digs. McMaster added another five points, and Jordan Dormandy (Kinderhook, NY) posted six points on six kills.

The Lakers balanced their scoring across the boards as five players scored at least five points apiece, and accounted for 44.5 points on the match. Julia Flohr provided 28 assists, and Allison Sullivan led their scoring barrage with a 12.5 point performance.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday morning when it closes out the Oswego State Tournament in a double-header versus Bard College at 11am, and St. John Fisher at 1pm.
