(Potsdam, N.Y.)- Five players reached doubles figures in scoring for the SUNY Canton men's basketball team as they beat SUNY ESF 90-58 in an exhibition game on Saturday at Clarkson University's Alumni Gym.
The game remained close through the first 16 minutes of the opening half as neither team was able to establish a lead of more than three points. The Roos pulled ahead by five points with just over three minutes remaining and that lead quickly swelled to 11 at 40-29 following three straight steals and breakaway layups by Tony Valentin (Perth Amboy, N.J.)
The lead grew to 14 points after Valentin connected on one of his four 3-pointers with 55 seconds remaining in the first half and the Roos eventually took a 49-36 lead into the locker room.
SUNY Canton then outscored ESF 41-22 in the second half to cruise to the win.
Valentin finished with a game-high 22 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Senior forward Silvon John (Bronx, N.Y.), junior forward Jeff Grenier (Whitehall, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Irving Cato (New York, N.Y.) each posted a double-double on Saturday. John had 18 points and 12 rebounds, Grenier had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Cato had 15 points and 12 boards. Scott Dixon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed 10 points and four assists.
The Mighty Oaks were led by Tim Hornstein who had 19 points and four rebounds. Cody Quinn added 17 points and two steals.
