Fredonia, NY – Morgan Barr (Almonte, ONT) turned aside all 34 shots he faced in the contest and the SUNY Canton power play unit went 2-for-6 with the skater advantage as the men's hockey team defeated host Fredonia State, 2-0, Friday evening. The win improves the Kangaroos to 1-2-1 as they pick up their first win of the young season, while the Blue Devils drop to 1-2-0.
Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, CA) got the scoring started for the Roos with 23 seconds left in the first period. Giczewski received a pass from Kristian Leach (Indianapolis, IN) and flipped a shot off a defenseman as the puck trickled past Blue Devil goaltender Jeff Flagler as SUNY Canton made the best of their power play opportunity. It ended one extra skater chance, and a second began immediately following a slashing penalty on the Blue Devils just after the goal was scored.
Dave Ferris (Saratoga Springs, NY) and the power play unit regrouped as just 15 seconds later the Roos added a second marker to the scoreboard with just eight seconds remaining in the period. Ferris hit Fredonia State with a pinball shot through a screen and off a defenseman giving the Roos a 2-0 lead in a matter of seconds as SUNY Canton controlled the momentum heading into the first intermission. Saylor Preston (Winnipeg, AB) and Vance Bridgman (North Pole, AK) earned assists on the tally. Despite the Blue Devils holding a 10-7 shots on goal edge it was visiting SUNY Canton who made their chances count, while Barr made 10 big saves.
The junior net minder continued his huge evening racking up a remarkable 16 saves in the second period followed by eight in the final frame to earn the shutout. In all, Barr finished the night with 34 saves to earn the shutout. Flagler made six saves in the first period and Christopher Eiserman had 12 stops over the final two periods for Fredonia State.

SUNY Canton finished the contest 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Blue Devils were 0-for-5 with the extra skater. The win is a huge one for the Roos as Fredonia State opened its season with a 3-2 overtime win against Oswego State, who appeared in the NCAA Division III National Championship game last season.
The win marks the first career victory for first year Head Coach Trevor Gilligan and was a sweet return home for Roo Assistant Coach Mat Hehr who was a former standout forward for the Blue Devils.
The men's hockey team is back in action tomorrow at Hamilton College for a scrimmage before returning home Friday for a 7:00 p.m. tilt with Southern New Hampshire University.
