POTSDAM – Demonstrators chanted “Pro-life is a lie. They don’t care if women die” at the protest for women’s reproductive rights in downtown Potsdam Sunday.
Dozens of people held signs, including “Abortion is Health Care,” “Our Bodies, Our Choices,” and “Mothers for Choice.”
The event was in response to the leaked legal draft showing the Supreme Court may overturn Roe vs. Wade, which protects a woman's right to seek an abortion.
“We wanted to have it on Mother’s Day because mothers should have a choice in reproductive rights,” said Laura Fair-Schulz, who organized the demonstration with her husband, Axel.
“It’s a social issue because the rich can always get abortions. They can go to a different state or country, so it affects poor people more,” said Axel.
“The majority of people want this. The pressure has to come from below,” he said.
“My grandmother gave me a recipe for abortion that had turpentine in it, in case any of ‘my friends’ ever needed it,” said Ginger Storey-Welch.
Also, when my cousin was a police officer in Las Vegas, before Roe Vs Wade, he found a young dead woman’s body in a dumpster from a botched abortion,” said Storey-Welch.
“It’s women’s health care, which we should all have access to,” said Laura Fair-Schultz.
