(Canton, N.Y.)- Bolstered by two spectacular goals from freshmen Shane Powell (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Eric Lopez (Holbrook, N.Y.) the SUNY Canton men’s soccer team tamed Johnson State College 2-0 on Sunday.
The Roos moved to 5-5-1 overall while posting their second shutout of the weekend and fifth overall this year.
SUNY Canton turned in another overwhelming performance holding the Badgers to just one shot attempt in the game. The Roos, as they did in a 6-0 win over Vermont Technical College on Saturday, controlled the tempo of the game from the start and never let up. The Roos were several close misses away from opening the game wide open in the first half.
Powell scored his fourth goal of the weekend in the eighth minute on a tremendous shot. Keelon Jospeh (Malabar, Arima, Trinidad) sent in a nice crossing pass from the right wing and Powell volleyd it out of the air and into the net with a beautiful half-bicycle kick.
The score held at 1-0 until the 63rd minute when Lopez scored his second goal of the weekend. Lopez carried the ball along the left wing and sent in a quick strike that many thought would be a crossing pass but instead the ball rocketed into the upper right corner of the net for the goal.
“It was nice to see continued improvement and dominate for the entire game once again,” said head coach Mark Howlett. “Guys are starting to understand our system and our ball movement today was outstanding. We look like a very dangerous team.”
The Roos are next in action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when they host Paul Smith’s College at 7 p.m.
