POTSDAM -- Village officials are honoring Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and the Pride community with declarations, as well as voicing support for a statewide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence signing.
At its May 18 meeting, the village board of trustees passed a resolution declaring May 2026 Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the Village of Potsdam.
The declaration recognizes “the innumerable contributions, vibrant cultures and rich heritage that generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have brought to our nation and our region, thereby enriching our community through the arts, sciences, education, technology, medicine and service,” the resolution said.
Trustees and the mayor also passed a resolution declaring June as LGBTQ Pride Month in the Village of Potsdam.
A Pride Flag is to be raised at the Civic Center on Park Street in recognition of the declaration.
“Whereas, the Village of Potsdam was proud to host the North Country’s first Gay Pride Parade in 2014, and is set to host the fourth annual Potsdam Pride Festival in 2026, bringing together residents and visitors from across the region,” the resolution said.
“Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Potsdam Village Board recognizes the month of June as LGBTQ Pride Month, and is committed to upholding freedom and fairness for all residents and visitors, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity; and let it be further resolved that the Potsdam Village Board aims to make the Village of Potsdam an even more welcoming, inclusive and safe community to all, no matter how you identify or who you love,” the resolution said.
Finally, the board voted to approve a resolution expressing support for the America250 Commemoration and participation in the state’s America250 efforts.
This July 4th will be the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Celebrations are planned around the nation and throughout the state.
“New York played a critical role in the American Revolution and the founding of the United States, and the Semiquincentennial provides a unique opportunity for the residents of the Village of Potsdam to explore and celebrate this rich history, honor the diverse contributions of New Yorkers, and envision the future of our community and nation,” the resolution said.
The resolution stated that the village wants to promote civic engagement, strengthen public understanding of American and New York history, and encourage community participation in activities and events that celebrate the Semiquincentennial, such as the upcoming Living History Days Revolutionary War Encampment at Ives Park.
The village plans to support and endorse 25oth activities and related efforts by the New York State 250th Commemoration Commission, the St. Lawrence County 250th Commission and the Potsdam Public Museum, the resolution said.
