POTSDAM – The Potsdam Public Museum’s current featured exhibition, Flesh & Ink: Tattoo Histories, will close Thursday, Oct. 6 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

A music jam of local musicians will be on hand, and visitors are encouraged to bring drum and join in.

The public is invited. There is no admission charge. Donations are accepted.

The museum’s collection started with a gift to the museum in the 1980s of a vintage tattoo kit from Coney Island, including tattoo artist samples, “flash art.” There are over 70 colorful examples from Coney Island of vintage iconic images on display.

The three tattoo machines, highly collectable, are also on view. In the exhibit, the curators, Dr. Laura Desmond and Mimi Van Deusen, showcase three local tattoo artists, Lori Jared, Dana Wakefild and Corey Rusgrove. Each displays samples of their work with artists statements.

Stephanie Russo, a SUNY Potsdam 2009 graduate, has a nine-minute video of local tattoo artist Corey Rusgrove tattooing one of the vintage images. This video is an up-close-and-personal showing of how a tattoo is applied from inception to completion.
