POTSDAM -- A Potsdam man who triggered a 45-minute “lockout” at Lawrence Avenue Elementary School this morning has been arrested, according to village police.
Toby J. Labier, 37, who allegedly told Principal Larry Jenne “and you wonder why schools get shot up,” was charged with second degree criminal nuisance and disorderly conduct following the incident, according to a press release from Potsdam police.
The threat occurred during a parent-student meeting at the school with the principal, Larry Jenne, according to Lieutenant Mark Murray.
Labier, the boyfriend of the student’s parent, became angry and made the comment “and you wonder why schools get shot up,” Murray said.
He was in “slamming the door mode” when he left the school building, and the school alerted police, Murray said.
Labier was located by Potsdam Police with assistance from state police, according to the press release.
The school was in lockout mode for about 45 minutes, according to Superintendent Pat Brady. The lockout ended after police made an arrest, Brady said.
No injuries were reported, according to police.
The school did a “terrific job” in handling the situation, Murray said.
Labier was released, with an appearance ticket returnable in Potsdam Village Court Oct. 11 at 8:30 a.m., according to the press release.
