POTSDAM -- Potsdam Elks Lodge 2074 recognized Charlie Bates of the West Potsdam Fire Department with a Presidential Volunteer Life Achievement Service award.
Bates has served the West Potsdam Community as a volunteer firefighter for 50 years, and served as the Departments Chief in 1984. He is still an active member.
The Presidential Life Achievement Award is awarded to an individual who has volunteered more than 4000 hours to their community, said Potsdam Elks Lodge member Tim Welpe. His volunteer time well exceeded 4,000 hours, he said.
The award was presented during the West Potsdam Fire Department annual dinner. In addition to the Presidential Award, Bates also received an award from the West Potsdam Fire Department recognizing his 50 years of service.
