I can’t understand why the Potsdam Village Board would approve a Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement for this project. With the limited availability of student housing and the ever-growing student population a total occupancy is guaranteed. The zoning is in place so this developer or another will build regardless. This financial arrangement is unfair to the Village’s existing landlords and the Village taxpayers as a whole. Village taxpayers will have to bear the additional expenses for Village resources like Fire, Police, Rescue and DPW. So to sum it up, one wealthy 1 percent developer plus an easily intimidated, incompetent board equals huge profits for the developer and a knife in the back for low and middle-income taxpayers. Thanks board members, see you in November. Our only hope is that the Potsdam Central School Board is competent enough to stop this.
